This newsletter drop covers the air compressor install I did inside the engine bay of my truck. If you follow the YouTube channel, this will likely answer any questions you had about parts, how I did the install, and why I did the install. If you are not a subscriber but are going to do your own air compressor install this will provide a good starting point and inspiration.

  • Why Do This Install

Having lower tire pressure in an off road scenario has many benefits from better traction, easier on the suspension and the trail, but what I value most is the added driving comfort even a few psi lower can offer. When driving for hours off road improved ride characteristics is priceless.

  • How to do the Install

For the methods I used you would have to have an extra battery tray already in your engine bay. Other than that it’s just the compressor and some hardware and sheet metal. The install is straightforward with the biggest hurdle being gaining access to the backside of the battery tray.

Getting access to the battery tray

After taking the wheel and wheel well liner off I could easily reach the bottom of the tray.

Next objective was to drill a hole for the hold down bolt.

    Drilling bolt hole

I got both hold down bolts bolted but there was still some wiggle room. This is where the scrap metal came into play. I found some garden siding and roughly cut a bracket that would fit under the compressor and bolt to the hole I had previously drilled. This took maybe 10 minutes and after bolting it down it was firmly secured.

  • Summary of Upgrades

This was a relatively easy upgrade. Other than roughly cutting some garden siding for a bracket and drilling a hole there is not much to it. I hardwired the pump to my disconnect switch and firewall. So far the pump is still securely mounted and has no signs of damage after three months of daily driving and about a hundred miles of off road driving.

If you have an extra battery tray vacant I would highly recommend this install because improving the ride quality of your rig will improve the overall experience of your journey.
