This newsletter drop summarizes the recent trip I took up in the Ouachita National Forest. If you follow the YouTube channel, this will likely answer any questions you had about locations, trail/camp conditions, and points of location within the video. If you are not a subscriber but are planning a trip this will provide a good starting point and inspiration.
Destinations
~Broken Bow
We camped here for a night and explored the glover river camp trail.
~Kiamichi Mountains
This is where the Kiamichi trail is, pronounced ky - Uh - Meechy or (K-Trail), As well as a few points of interest, it’s about an hour drive from Broken Bow.
Campsite Location
~ The camp spot is right along broken bow lake. Found on the OnX app Forest service road 54037. There are two different campsites the first one that goes left was wrecked with fallen trees and not much space to setup camp. Taking a right turn leads to a campspot that has enough space for two rigs and a nice view of the lake. very secluded and quiet. Last time I looked on OnX the road to get there was closed.
Campsite coordinates: 34.24194, -94.69027

Campsite accessibility
~ The trail to the campsite was tight for my full-size rig but definitely possible if you don’t mind some pinstripes. I would recommend a high clearance four wheel drive rig for this site.
Trails
~ The Kiamichi trail starts at three sticks monument and goes east towards Mena Oklahoma. It is a decently long trail. Took us about 5 hours to complete. Slow rocky sections broken up with a few open stretches of smooth straightaways full of dirt roads and mud puddles. It had rained the day before but the mud was minimal.
~ Glover River Camp trail starts of highway 259 in Broken Bow and is a fun trail with some campsites along cedar creek that could fit 2-3 rigs. we made it all the way to a large concrete bridge and had to turn around due to a trail closure. Any four wheel drive vehicle could handle this trail. This trail can be done within a few hours
Glover River TrailHead Coordinates: 34.21871, -94.77957
Kiamichi TrailHead Coordinates: 34.52304, -94.52513

Points of interest
~ Three sticks monument is a feature off highway 259 and is dedicated to senators Robert S. Kerr and Mike Monroney for helping develop southeast Oklahoma. It is a cool stop but has a lot of graffiti that ruins the atmosphere of it. However, there is a good view of the surrounding national forest.
Three Sticks Coordinates: 34.61276, -94.65757
~ There is a trail that starts right behind the monument which takes you to the lookout tower. This trail took us awhile due to numerous mudholes and a few decent rock obstacles. There is not much left of the tower but it is a cool place to stop and have lunch. The trail beyond the tower is private land so don’t go any further past it.

Gear notes
~LET'S CAMP Folding Camping Table - This table has been working great for cooking at camp. It has adjustable legs so it’s always level. The only downside is it cant handle a lot of weight so you can’t treat it like a workbench.

Scripture of the month:
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so you can endure it.
